Illinois Democrats are once again congratulating themselves for spending money they did not earn, on problems they refuse to fix, with results they will never be held accountable for.
This week, Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth announced a massive federal funding package they claim delivers "Illinois priorities." What it actually delivers is more proof that Washington has learned nothing and Illinois voters are expected to keep paying the bill.
This was not reform. This was not accountability. This was not leadership. This was a shopping spree with taxpayer money, wrapped in buzzwords and sold as progress.
Spending Is Not Solving Anything
The press release reads like a wish list for bureaucrats, nonprofits, universities, and consultants. Millions for violence interruption programs. Millions for academic studies. Millions for data registries. Millions for climate initiatives and federal enforcement.
And yet Chicago remains one of the most violent major cities in America. Illinois continues to lose residents, businesses, and police officers. Property taxes are crushing families. Energy costs are rising. Schools are failing kids. Infrastructure is still crumbling.
If throwing money at these problems worked, Illinois would be the safest, most prosperous state in the country by now. Instead, it is a warning label.
Law Enforcement Gets Lip Service, Not Support
Democrats love to say they support public safety. What they actually fund are programs that talk about crime, study crime, model crime, and "address root causes" of crime. Meanwhile, police officers are understaffed, prosecutors are hamstrung, and repeat offenders are cycled back onto the streets.
A few grants for equipment do not make up for years of anti police rhetoric, soft on crime policies, and ideological prosecutors who refuse to do their jobs. You do not reduce violence by outsourcing responsibility to nonprofits and universities. You reduce violence by enforcing the law.
Federal Control Comes With Strings
Much of this money flows through federal agencies that have shown time and again they cannot manage costs, timelines, or outcomes. Infrastructure projects balloon. Environmental rules strangle development. Energy policies drive up utility bills. Local control disappears behind federal mandates.
Washington politicians love to brag about "bringing money home," but they never talk about the regulations, compliance costs, and future tax hikes that follow.
No Mention of Debt, Inflation, or Reality
There is not a single serious discussion of the national debt. Not one mention of spending restraint. Not one acknowledgment that inflation is hammering working families.
The national debt is over $34 trillion. That is not abstract. That is higher grocery bills. Higher interest rates. Higher rent. Fewer opportunities for the next generation.
Washington Democrats act like federal money is free. It is not. Every dollar spent here is borrowed against your future or your kids' future.
Illinois Deserves Better Than Applause Lines
Durbin and Duckworth call this package an investment. Illinois voters should call it what it is. More of the same policies that hollowed out the state, drove families away, and made government bigger while life got harder.
Illinois does not need more studies, more programs, or more press releases. It needs accountability, law enforcement that is backed instead of blamed, energy policies that lower costs instead of raising them, and leadership that understands spending is not a substitute for results.
At some point, voters have to ask a simple question. If these people have been in charge for decades and things keep getting worse, why would we reward them with more power and more money?
Because hope is not a plan. Spending is not success. And Illinois cannot afford another round of Washington self congratulation.
