Op-Ed | By Michael "Mickey" Scornavacco
If you thought Democrats' relentless resistance ended with defeat at the ballot box, think again. Ilhan Omar - a politician whose career has been defined as much by tribal grievance as legislative accomplishment - capped off 2025 not with unity or solutions, but with the same old playbook: deflection, division, and denial of reality.

Let's get something straight: Omar doesn't represent Minnesotans. She represents chaos. Her year was marked not by meaningful leadership, but by crisis fomenting and willful antagonism toward anything that resembles law and order.
Start with immigration - the defining issue of our era. While millions of Americans demand secure borders and accountable enforcement, Omar picked protest over policy. She vowed on social media not to give ICE "a single cent" in federal funding, even as the agency fights violent cartels and criminal gangs crossing our border. That's not compassion. It's open-border absolutism in daylight, a threat to safety disguised as moral superiority.

Her posture emboldened chaos on the streets of Minneapolis, where protests exploded after an ICE agent shot a violent suspect. Omar didn't call for calm, she fed the flames, blaming law enforcement and painting them as oppressors. Her headline-grabbing visit to an ICE site ended with lawmakers blocked from entry - a spectacle, not a solution.
But the controversies don't stop at immigration. House Republicans have launched an official investigation into Omar's sudden and suspicious rise in personal and family wealth, probing whether her financial disclosures and her husband's business ventures hold up under scrutiny. Oversight Committee attorneys are reportedly considering subpoenas as part of the inquiry. That's the sort of thing you expect in Banana Republics, not in the U.S. House.

And in the political arena, Omar's rhetoric is as combustible as her record. In Minnesota - a district with precious few serious GOP challengers - she still draws primary challengers from the left, not from constituents demanding competence or accountability. Meanwhile, critics on the right cite a pattern of inflammatory statements that have sparked calls for censure or removal from committee assignments.
Then there's her public demeanor. When confronted by a reporter about fraud allegations tied to the Somali community and her family's finances, Omar didn't answer - she mocked the journalist's intelligence and dismissed the questions entirely. That response wasn't confidence. It was contempt.
No wonder President Trump and others have blasted her. His recent Truth Social posts called out Omar by name, accusing her of being unpatriotic and even suggesting punishment for her alleged misdeeds - comments that, for all their incendiary tone, reflect the deep erosion of trust many Americans feel toward lawmakers who appear to dodge scrutiny rather than embrace transparency.
Let's be clear: free speech protects Omar's words, but it does not shield her from accountability. When a member of Congress campaigns against fundamental American institutions - ICE, border security, federal law - while dodging questions about ethics and finances, that is not representation. That is political abdication.
Minnesotans deserve better than brown-shirt rhetoric and grievance politics. America deserves leaders who build, not burn. Omar's 2025 wasn't a reflection - it was a reckoning: a warning that the Democratic coalition still prizes spectacle over substance and grievance over governance.
2026 must be the year voters reclaim sanity in Congress.
